The long passage on the previous day had left us with a more reasonable day’s sail to Burgstaaken on the German island of Fehmarn, where we were planning to lay the boat up for the winter. The wind was quite strong, but was still behind us so not too uncomfortable. Worse was the torrential rain that fell during the 12-2 watch, during which a small bird took shelter under the sprayhood. After a longish rest he took off and, unusually, actually flew towards the land which was quite close at that point.

Again there was plenty of shipping in the deep water channels to contend with, but the journey was otherwise uneventful and we were soon tied up in the harbour surrounded by old friends. One of the reasons we had chosen Burgstaaken were the many recommendations made by other CA members, who also overwinter there.
