We woke late, catching up on some of the sleep that
the storm had deprived us of during the night. By the time we were having
breakfast the wind had dropped to a light breeze and Winthrop harbour was calm
again. After saying our goodbyes to Ahmet, who had been so helpful while we
made Winthrop our base, we cast off at half eleven and motored out of Winthrop
Harbour with the big jets queuing up to the East to land at Logan Airport. We
threaded our way through the Boston Harbour islands taking the Narrows between
Lovell and Gallops Islands into the South Channel and then rounded Point
Allerton, before setting a course to clear the ledges off Cohasset.
The wind was from the NW but so light that, although we had sails set, we kept
the engine going to maintain a reasonable speed.
We arrived in Scituate Harbour mid afternoon but it
was very quiet. It really is the end of the season now. We motored up to the top
of the harbour where the small town is located, but it did not seem very
promising for mooring so we went back to the main harbour and hailed the yacht
club on the vhf. When Kirsty and I were here last, the club launch was buzzing
about the harbour showing yachts to moorings and ferrying crews to and from
their boats non stop. This afternoon when the launch showed up the driver
apologised for being tardy, explaining that he had been doing dock maintenance,
an explanation that was somewhat unnecessary as he and his clothes were well
painted. Once we were secured to a mooring, he took us up to the town,
collecting us an hour later after Kay and I had had a look round and bought
supplies. The town was no busier than the harbour.
We sat in the cockpit with a drink as the sun sett,
going below to cook as darkness fell.
