The last 36 hours have been hard sailing in rough
seas. The only compensation is that the direction has had enough West in it to
give good distances and a track far enough south to avoid the centre of the
depression which has now passed away north eastwards behind us. We could see the
lightening flashing away over there last night as the wind with us gusted up to
an estimated gale force. Cooking a hot meal was just too hard so Jims excellent
sandwiches were once again a life saver.
The only points of interest to report are flying
fish sighted yesterday evening, though none on board yet, and a tanker passing
quite close off our port side early this morning.
This morning the wind has dropped to about a force
5/6 but the sea is still very lumpy, with waves breaking over the boat pretty
regularly. Impossible to get things dried out and with the hatches locked down
tight it is hot and humid below decks. However the improvement has made the
domestics easier so the skipper has lead by example with a shower and a shave.
As conditions are predicted to improve I'm hoping the crew will follow
suit.
A look ahead at the gribs this morning suggests our
problem will be too little wind in the future and the right strategy
hard to call. Still looks a good bet to be pushing south a bit.
We are beam reaching at present under partly rolled
genoa, with the main still stowed. making about 120 degrees.
