The final stop was at Algar do Carvao, the lava chimney, only two of which can be entered in the world ( the other is in Iceland). Over 249 steps to walk down to the bottom platform. The view of the vent is spectacular.
There was a” cathedral “area with amazing acoustics and the lake at the base.
Lava dripped into stalactites and formed wave patterns.
An interesting afternoon followed by a lovely evening. The daughters of two friends joined us for drinks on the boat followed by tapas in the town. We were able to exchange sightseeing tips. We’re moving onto São Jorge and Pico, where they’ve already been and they onto São Miguel which we know well.
