Always jobs to be done. Had to get the gas bottle refilled which is notoriously difficult as it appears to be very slow to fill and people give up trying. F phoned ahead and the shop was very chipper-“ any bottle can be filled from anywhere in the world.” Drop off before 11 am to collect same day after 3pm.
Duly dropped it off, popped into famous bakery for a coffee and a traditional Portuguese custard tart, only €4. Most things are very reasonably priced. 2 small beers cost €2. Compare that to the UK!
Returned to marina to finalise immigration process. The marina manager had completed all the forms yesterday, with boat, insurance and passport details. Basically just a stamp in our passports was necessary. We’re now legal. Our 90 days begin !
Just missed The White Experience, a festival celebrating Horta gaining city status 191 years ago. The streets are decorated with numerous jellyfish and sea creatures.

The old 16th century fortress, now a hotel overlooks an impressive collection of ancient anchors (Ed. slight worry here, the harbour has been used for centuries by pirates, traders, invaders and various other sailing ships avoiding the odd hurricane. They laid ancient massive hurricane chains on the seabed to catch and hold dragging anchors. Sadly they are still quite effective. The cheery harbourmaster told me not to worry as there are lots of divers who will free a snagged hook, for a fee)

Decided to have lunch before going back for the gas bottle. Marina manager recommended Canto da Doca, in a former fisherman’s storage building, overlooking the boats. A hot lava stone is brought to the table to cook the selection of fish and meat, appropriate on a volcanic island. Had a delicious meal with local vihno verde, a real treat.
Good decision. Poured with rain this evening so hunkered down.
