The weather got better or drier at least and the wind moderated so at 4 pm we left Port Circumcision and two hours later were nicely moored in Stella Creek near Vernadsky Base on Galindez Island.  On the way we encountered a school of seals diving like dolphins through the water.

It is extremely protected here.  The Ukrainians have a famous reputation for generous hospitality to visiting yachts offering copious servings of moonshine vodka, so you can imagine our disappointment when we met the Base Commander who told us that they were in the middle of a complete annual staff changeover and wouldn’t offer hospitality for at least five days.  He is obviously the new broom. This has been the first and I hope only major disappointment of this Antarctic adventure.

We console ourselves at dinner by breaking the one bottle of wine per rule with a second bottle of a very smooth Argentinean Cabernet Sauvignon called "Don David," which for some reason I find really tasty.

We are now at Latitude 64 Degrees 14 minutes 932 Seconds which is as far South as we will go.  When we leave here we’ll be starting back which is a bittersweet realization.

This morning it’s just above freezing with fluffy snow flurries and we will have a shore outing before heading North 15 miles to the next stop, Pleaneau.
