Napoleon, almighty Emperor of France, was defeated by the Duke of Wellington’s army at Waterloo. Mild assistance from Prussian Genral Blücher was used to good effect. After the battle the captured Napoleon was held offshore until the decision was made to transport him to exile and imprisonment on the island of St Helena. There he was taken with a limited entourage in a British warship. He arrived in 1805 and preparations were made - he finished up being held in Longwood House. ![]() ![]() Arthur inspects the tomb. During some of his walkabouts on the island he chose a very peaceful final resting place as he could not imagine Britain ever letting his remains return to France. Napoleons remains were eventually exhumed and returned to be interred at Les Invalides in Paris. |
