Nightsong

Dear Blog
Noon position (GMT-2) 37.15N 43.24W - 177 miles
since noon yesterday just under 7.5 knots average - not a bad run but I was
hoping for more. However the seas are huge which slows her and I am being
cautious not to push the boat too hard in order to preserve the
jib.
Well here we are rolling along in a SSW force force
6/7.with 3 reefs in the main and well rolled jib - took the 3rd reef before dark
last night and because it blew a true Force 8 at some points in the night
I am glad we did - mostly however force 6/7 ie in the 23-30 knot range. It looks
as if we will have this wind direction or rather between W and S for the rest of
the voyage - which should get us into Horta by Monday afternoon or so. Forecast
for Saturday midday on the gribs is for winds in the 35-40 knot range ie force
8/9 so I am going to fit the storm jib stay (when the wind decreases a bit
tomorrow) and we will probably use the 12 sqm storm jib only taking down the
main entirely. Good to use it once in anger!!
![]() We still are managing to eat fresh food every lunch
and supper - for lunch either salade nicoise or salad with meat and cheese and
pitta bread (except David who doesn't like pitta but the fresh bread has long
gone off) - for supper we have had or will have
And we didn't use the separate freezer. For the
last 2 nights (Saturday and Sunday) we will have to have tins. AJB has done
all the cooking but no washing up!!
Learnt the lessons of the ARC and taken lots of
citrus fruit which has lasted brilliantly (and we still have enough for 2 more
days) plus apples, melons and pineapple which all finished now. We will drink
fruit juice for the last 2 days to prevent the onset of scurvy!!
Less than 700 miles to go now - we are in the home
straight!!
