We left at first light and motored the couple of miles to the lake worth entrance, once outside we put the main up, set the genoa and were sailing, the gulf stream runs very close to the coast near lake worth so we were in it almost immediately, there were a couple of other boats out, one Catamaran and a bigger Oyster we had seen in the Bahamas. The wind was more northerly than predicted and so we actually put in a few tacks 😱 who ever thought tacking into a northerly wind with the opposing gulf stream was a good idea 🤣, it was actually not nearly as bad as we would have expected with 13-15kts wind and 3.5kts current, I would be lying if I said it was a lovely comfortable sail but it was certainly not the worst we’ve had. Early afternoon the wind dropped to only 8 kts and with the wave action we couldn’t keep the sails from flogging so we motorsailed on and off for a few hours, sailing when we could. By now the big Oyster who had been motoring north was long gone and the Catamaran had headed towards the shore so it was only ever probably planning a day sail up the coast. the first day we did well and hit over 10 knots at times thanks to the gulf stream.
