We went running with Grenada Hash House Harriers last
night.
This was a full moon hash, their 585th run and was due to
start at 6pm.
On the way to the hash we noticed what looked like a paper
trail on the side of the road, but it was rather spread out. When we got
closer to the start of the run at St George's University we realised that we
were follolwing the hare who was laying the trail from the back of a
truck!!!
When we arrived at the start location, it was a great spot
next to a beach and barbeque was being cooked to have after the run and the beer
was on ice. We noticed that no many people were wearing hash T
shirts and it all looked a bit tame.
A hash preamble asked if there were any virgins and
explained that people had to follow the trail (or else). A check was a circle
with lots of false trails going from it, but one was the right one. There
were walkers and runners and the walkers were to go back at a specific
point.
We set off at 6.30pm and hashed on the beach, up the hill,
up the next hill and the next until we were at the highest point and could see
both sides of the islands. Then down and down until we reached the long
beach the other side. We passed lots of bars, but I had we had no cash :-(
Eventually we got to the half way beer stop an hour and
twenty minutes into the run.. This was very welcome, but more of the
seriuos people had water. We finally got in after 2 hours 15 minutes and
quite a few people were getting in an hour after us. This really was a
marathon hash.. We only saw one check and this was simply a circle and the
trail followed straight on from there.
There were no down down's, no abuse and no circle, well
not by the time we left.
We were told that the hash was normally just an
hour. Two trails are laid, one for the runners and one for the
walkers. The fast runners tend to complete the run in about half an
hour.
But one thing they have got right, lots of cheap beer and
food after each run. :-)
