Sailing down to Labrador

Yesterday early afternoon we left Ravencraig Harbour a small secluded cove
on the east side of Baffin Island after sheltering from the wind and seas for
about six hours. No sign of any life ashore just a few rusted out oil drums on
the rocky beach.
Last night as we headed south along the east side of Davis Strait the wind
and seas picked up and by sunrise we decided to seek shelter to the south side
of Henry Kater Penisular. As the winds increased to 30 knots we dropped
our anchor in Home Bay 69.09 North, 67.15 East at around 10.00
hours.
We are safely anchored about 300 yards from shore in 15 meters of greyish,
cobalt seas with white capped seas and the spume picked up and blown upwards
into the freezing brisk, afternoon air. The wind is howling through our
rigging and we are glad to be in this safe haven.
The shore here is a sandy beach with heath and low lying vegetation and
lichen for the herds of reindeer. Hues of mustard, black and brown colour the
low lying hills in the background with some patches of green next to the
creeks and fen areas. To the east of us a small skinny rocky
peninsular and nearby a beached iceberg that looks like a gigantic whale
lying on its side! This afternoon Philip was the winner of the quiz and will win
an extra piece of fruit cake when it exits our small gimballed oven probably
tomorrow afternoon. Tonight Catherine made a spectacular three course meal which
included a fish pie with eggs! Of all the suppers she has created hands down it
was my favourite! The raspberry meringue pie with garlic was also outstanding!
Yes, the garlic container spilled onto her creation when she making it! I think
it enhanced it! Dai spent time servicing the generator today and making sure
that all the equipment was in good order. Pete has been busy reading today and
is presently in his bunk resting for his anchor watch. While at anchor we all
take turns for two hours with the exception of the crew member who is on
galley and cleaning duties from noon to noon.
Wishing you all from here a “nos da” and good night and to all our American
supporters and blog watchers a good Labour Day weekend to you all!
