OOJAH's AWESOME ODYSSEY

After a lot of motoring in the US we sailed the final 100nm back to New York via Port Jefferson & Port Washington and are now packing up in Mamaroneck close to New York. It seems unbelievable that we have lived on Oojah for nearly 2 1/2 years & sailed over 11,000 nautical miles or 12 nm a day. Less satisfactorily we have run the engine for 900 hours, which although only about an hour a day, disappointingly suggests we have motored 40% of the way! At 2 litres an hour that's 400 gallons of diesel at 27.5 mpg, but at least it's only $4 a gallon here. We're on our 2nd toilet pump & a new set of batteries, & we had to replace the mainsail & the jib but otherwise Oojah has performed exemplarily. At times it's been a little too exciting for Christene but apart from the first few days of the Atlantic crossing we've had no real weather problems. We only ran aground twice but the 2nd time incurred a very expensive tow off although no damage apart from to the pride.
The highlights were the Rias in NW Spain, the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, the Grenadines, Charleston, Annapolis, New York & Maine, but the lifestyle itself has been a huge experience. As the UK winter approaches we'll probably wonder why we've swopped being a couple of 'grey nomads' in the sunshine for the hassle of daily life in the South of England.
We look forward to catching up with family & friends at home but will miss all the lovely people we've met on the way. After nearly 6 years of fun Oojah is looking for a new home in the States. Maybe she's taken to the lifestyle as well? Hopefully it will not be too long before we're able to set off for fresh adventures. I don't know who, if anyone, has been following the blog which is a definite disadvantage of writing one, but for now that's the end, so goodbye ...
With love to all, Peter & Christene
