We arrived at Salcombe about 5pm having sailed all
through the night and day. It has been a long, challenging and
exhilarating passage, with the wind on the nose the whole way and occasionally
25 knots of wind. I tried not to think of the pre trip plans which
included the words "short days and gentle seas", as I struggled to keep the soup
cups and sandwiches from depositing themselves on the cabin sole. However,
Salcombe is quite beautiful and we have a delightfully quiet mooring and
received a complimentary bottle of ecological washing up liquid when we paid our
mooring fees. Supper was cooked on a level platform and an early
night was had by Whisper's crew.
The entry into Salcombe harbour was
interesting as a sand bar lies across the entrance and should not be negotiated
on an ebb tide with strong onshore winds or swells, thankfully this was not a
problem for us. Evidently, Salcombe's Bar was made famous in Tennyson's
"Crossing of the Bar".
Tomorrow, we will leave this lovely quiet harbour
after breakfast and make our way on towards Falmouth.
