"Tyrrel Bay - 29/30th December"
I was very amused to read in our Windward Islands
Guide, that there are over 100 rum shops on this small island, but only one gas
station! We had a gentle day yesterday and went ashore to have lunch and
acquire a code to enable us to access the free Wifi in the bay. The
Wifi is broadcast by several businesses on the island and is free to
anyone, but a donation can be made to the Children's Fund. This is a local
charity and helps to send bright children to school and also pays for school
lunches for those who need help. The islands also holds an auction each
August and the proceeds raised go to the Children's Fund too. Some good
news which has drifted along the grapevine which we heard a few days ago, is
that the Mt. Airie Readers Group on Grenada, (we helped at their Christmas
party), who were hoping to raise sufficient funds to complete the second floor
on the shelter, so that it could be used as a permanent classroom for the kids,
have received a large donation from the Australian Government, so are now able
to go ahead with the rest of the building. What a wonderful Christmas
present for all the children and their determined hardworking benefactor!
We bumped into one of the single handers, who came
to the Christmas beach party and later met up for a drink and supper at one of
the local restaurants called Lambi's. It was an enjoyable evening and
quite exciting looking for Whisper in the dark. We had both forgotten to
leave an anchor light on and bring a torch with us, as it was daylight when we
left Whisper. We will be more careful next time.
Today, amongst other things, I was finally
successful in setting up Whisper's Wifi. I thought that I had fixed it
again yesterday, but once the box was hoisted up the mast, it became sick
again! Knowing that it was set up OK (even our hotspot is secure), because
I had received my many emails only half an hour previously, I can only assume
that it is the router itself as it doesn't appear to boot up every time.
For the time being it is sitting, box open, on the chart table so that I can
keep an eye on it and hopefully get some replies to my emails out over the
Ethernet.
In the afternoon, Sweet Sensation, Dream Chaser and
Essex Girl arrived in the bay. As Cariad and Whisper are already here all
ships are gathered for our New Year festivities. Communications were made
and sundowners were enjoyed in Whispers cockpit at the agreed time.
Arrangements were made for a bus trip around the island tomorrow and ingredients
donated or promised for our New Year's Eve dinner on board Sweet Sensation
tomorrow evening. A fun day promised to end our exciting year! I
cannot believe that we have been away for six months and that theoretically we
are half way now and on our way home!
