"George Town, Grenada - 10-12th
December"
We left Tyrill Bay after our early morning cup of
tea and had breakfast on our way. It was approximately 40 miles from
Carriacou to St George's Bay in Grenada. I was reminded of the big ocean
seas as we crossed the channel to Grenada, the wind was 15 knots from the
NE, with the wind behind us we headed south under a reefed headsail
alone. We arrived early afternoon and took a mooring at the Grenada Yacht
Club after refueling. We have spent the last couple of days, maintaining
the boat, doing the inevitable washing and dodging the torrential
showers. Since we have arrived here we have been drenched, either by the
intense humidity or by getting caught out in the many
tropical showers. Night hours in the marina have been spent getting
up and down to close the hatches only to open them again some 10 minutes or so
later.
On Tuesday evening we all went out to a local
restaurant for our last final meal together, it was most enjoyable. We
chose to eat outside under the awning, as it was a warm evening.
The heavy showers of rain persisted and apart from us all
standing up at one point and taking a corner of the table each to move it
further into the shelter so that we could all remain dry, the sound of the
passing cars sloshing through the puddles accompanied by the chorus of tree
frogs all added to the atmosphere of a delightful tropical evening in good
company. Our waitress was quite charming, happy and laughed raucously when
Noel joked with her. She was so happy as she cleared our plates and
gave us the choice of desserts. We all chose Rum n Raisin ice-cream (our
ships crew now has a two new converts to this delight), it clearly was her
favourite as well.
During our stay here Noel was called upon for some
doctoring advice. An English lady had fallen whilst trying to board her
boat and hurt her shoulder. After examining her, he advised that she
should have it x-rayed. She was reluctant to do this, but
the continuation of extreme pain led her to be persuaded the following
day. Apparently she has a fracture dislocation of her
shoulder. She has now been operated on and her shoulder is
relocated and strapped to her chest.
Mick and Tony started their journey home
yesterday evening, flying down to Trinidad for an overnight stop before
their transatlantic flight to Gatwick this evening. It was sad to say
good-bye to our companions of 6 weeks, we have accomplished so much
together. Their sailing expertise along with Noel's ensured us a safe and
happy journey, even if there are at least three and sometimes four different
ways of doing one thing! Thank you both so much Mick and Tony for all
your help and skills in getting Whisper repaired and shipshape. Tony, I
know that you enjoy cooking, but again from Noel, Mick and myself thank you so
very much for feeding us so well in such difficult conditions. I
not only enjoyed your cooking but I admired your coolness and calm as the galley
heaved and rolled before you, with cupboards trying to empty
their contents as soon as you opened the door and sometimes even when you
didn't! I have a lot to learn!
