We are still at Rubicon marina on the southern tip
of Lanzarote. Very smart with some somer very expensive shops around the
marina---shades of St Tropez and therefore time to move on.
We hired a car and did a circuit of Lanzarote and
went to Arrecife to get a new battery for the generator (the old one came with
the boat and gave up on us) and Paul bought some other things for Oyster Moon.
Helen went to Ikea and 'down below' on Marita has changed to pale blue with the
purchase of some 'cotton throws'!
Anchored off Graciosa was a sail training/prison
ship. A Swiss boat and we talked to Jonathan, aged late tewenties, who
was the psychologist on board. It has a crew of 4 and up to eighteen young
offenders aged between 13 and 17. It is their last chance before prison and they
are on the boat for 40 weeks. They have continuous weekly assessment and if they
pass their 'sentence' goes down one week and if not then it remains the same.
They had just sailed down from Ireland and had had very heavy weather at the
start with one young lad threatening to throw himself off the boat---he was
locked below! They are sailing down to Cape Verde and then back up to the
Baltic.
For those who walk out on Trefusis point you may
have seen her moored off Kiln Quay last summer. The ''lads'' rowed in the
Nankersey gig and Jonathan made very favourable comment about Anne
Oliver.
Other photos show the vineyards on Lanzarote---- a
hollow dug out of the larvae planted with a vine and surrounded by a stone wall
to protect the vine from the wind. The wine is not too bad!!
The other pictures are a sculpture on a roundabout
in Arrecife and Rubicon Marina.
We leave for the next island within the next couple
of days if weather ok.
