Sailing

The engine stayed on from yesterday afternoon till 7.30 am and we spent that time going East or North East depending on the wave pattern as it dropped away.  Tim sent me a mail last night telling me to stay south of 46 degrees North to avoid a low and that's just what I have done but it did leave me in the wind hole a bit longer than anticipated.  (Jetty with a similar update too but I only saw that this afternoon (I only pick up texts between 4pm - 7pm as I want to keep the batteries topped up and the phone dry and safe).

Anyway that decision makes it pointless to add distance going north now to specifically get to 47 degrees which will happen anyway on this course in a day or so.  I am heading for Falmouth and will start counting down the mileages in the blog.

I saw an amazing moonrise last night at 01.30 hrs.  The moon was absolutely huge and there was a perfect gap on the horizon for it to climb towards the clouds above.  The early morning was beautiful too and brought some wind but before I start to sound like an old hippie, the weather has deteriorated through the day, I've had to reef progressively as the wind rises and it's been raining off and on since 10am.  Once I write this then I have to decide whether to take the main down or go to 3rd reef (think it's coming down as the southerlies I'm getting will be followed by westerlies and the genny can handle that alone).

Nature
Towed a lure in daylight yesterday - no action to report
A pair of sheerwaters have been circling the boat all day - I havent seen them actually dive on a fish yet but live in hope.  And I saw a new bird, looked and flew like your standard Southend seagull but light grey all over (over to you Dave Smart).

General.
The rain is my fault.  I did my washing at 8.30 in bright sunshine and we had cloud and raindrops within the hour.
Whilst it was quiet, sunny etc, I also topped off my diesel tanks which were last brimmed in Ponta Delgarda.  I've used 38 litres and run the engine for 28 hours full to full so about 1.3 litres / hour at 1600 rpm .  I did the same calculation in the Azores but had run the engine at 1800 rpm to burn 1.5 litres / hour.  I have about 100L of fuel left but obviously hoping it's wind power all the way from here

The skies are getting grayer and the sea a little more lumpy so time to go sort things.  Have a good evening.

Texts

Tim - thanks again on weather.  Will get grib to confirm but I'm expecting this southerly to strengthen, go through quickly and leave me with moderate westerlies.

Jetty - thanks also on weather.  Changed course but see what's coming.

Uncle Mike - I should have come to you for sailing training then!  The trick with this offshore stuff is to keep the water out, the mast up and me on the boat.  So hopefully, i wont have to worry about tipping it over when climbing back on board.

Mum - Think I'm more a Barbie man than Oppenheimer.  But havent been to the cinema in living memory so more likely, neither.

Em - Hi there.  I'm on the homeward leg now.  The sailing is great and I'm getting what I signed up for so no complaints.  I'll be back to pick up on transport duty before you know it.  x

Someone else - I had another message last night but it was an "incompatible message format".
