We went north from Sardinia, stopping first at the little island of
Lavezzi, which is a marine park.
Lazezzi has some history. On 15 February 1855, a French warship, La
Semillante carrying troops to the
Crimean war, hit the reefs around the island and sank. There were 773
on board and no one survived.
![]() The memorial to La Semillante.
![]() Unusual rock formations....
![]() ...and pretty wildflowers.
![]() The cemetery for the soldiers and sailors. Since the bodies were not
identifiable, there are headstones for
the officers, but all were buried together in a mass grave.
![]() Anchored in pristine clear water.
![]() From Lavezzi, we went to the southern point of the island of Corsica to
visit Bonifacio, one of the most
dramatic harbours in the world.
![]() The old town perched on the cliffs, much of it on overhangs.
![]() Steps from the town down to the water. A long climb back.
![]() Somewhere here is the harbour entrance.....
![]() ....there it is, follow the ferry.
![]() Looking down the main harbour....
![]() ...and up to the town.
![]() We left Bonifacio and moved up the south west coast which has many pretty
anchorages. This one has
a watch tower built by the Genoese (on the left), and a crag called the
"Lions Head" (on the right).
![]() Close up of the lions head. We suspect that someone piled up rocks on
top for a crown.
![]() Another beautiful sunset.
