After leaving Istanbul, we sailed down to the Dardenelles and docked in the
harbour at Cannakale, which is across the water from Gallipoli and is a good
place to start the tour to ANZA Cove.
We weren't that surprised to see another Australian boat there, but were
astonished to find on board Mark Bethwaite from Mosman, Sydney. Mark and
Sandra were both at Deutsche Bank in Sydney some years ago, and Mark's father,
Frank Bethwaite, was a founder of the Northbridge Sailing Club and the designer
of the Taser, the dinghy we raced at Northbridge for many years.
Mark and his wife Carolyn are spending the Northern summers sailing the
Med. in their yacht 'Time Out' and the northern winters back home in
Sydney.

The site of ancient Troy is not far from Cannakale. This is the
Trojan horse which was made for
the recent Hollywood film, Troy, and is placed just outside the
harbour.

ANZAC Cove (though the beach was wider back then).

The wonderful and moving words of Kemal Mustafa Ataturk.

The cemetery at ANZAC Cove. The whole peninsula is dotted with cementeries
beautifully maintained
by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Lone Pine.

The NZ memorial on the summit of Chunuk Bair, and a stature of
Ataturk.

Looking from Chunuk Bair north towards Sulva Bay, where the last landings
took place not
long before the evacuation.
