Five Islands

We are continuing to enjoy this spot. We haven't been doing any snorkelling here as the water is not as clear (being closer to the main land). We swim on the shallow sand bank which extends from eastern end of the island. The water temp is warm to hot on top with cool to cold currents underneath. There are bait fish everywhere, tickling your legs when they make the occasional contact. We have walked the island and found two frangipani trees and 2 fresh water wells. It is pretty amazing that these islands are a couple of feet above sea level but most have fresh water wells/soaks. We raided the one without the resident crab and washed the sheets and towels (which saves on our boat tank supply). The occasional storm allows us to collect rain water to replenish them. We had another storm this morning. The lightning show prior to it hitting us was speccy (see photo below). The storm hit about 5.30am with wind gusts of up to 37 knots. A bit exciting but didn't last too long & we were able to collect about 90 litres of water. We had a visitor the other day. He or she was out for a swim to another island and decided that the steps on the sugar scoop was a good place to stop for a brief rest. Not sure what type of lizard it was but it was the most vivid green and not at all concerned by us peering and taking photos (one attached). One of the locals sold us a 4kg red snapper which we filleted and then boiled up the spine, throat and head to make stock. We then started to talk about Ciguatera poisoning and decided not to risk it so the stock went over board. John volunteered to be the test rat and ate a small amount of the fillet. After suffering no ill effects we had fish fillets with a really good sauce and rice for dinner. We still have 3 feeds worth of fish in the freezer. Reading lots of books, but have been remiss with our Spanish lessons, so will have to put some time and effort into that. Have run out of fresh fruit & veg so will have to do a run to Nargana shortly to do a restock if the veggie boat does not find us.
