We motor sailed 9nm up the coast from Torhavn on Thursday against 20 kts of ENE wind through an extremely rough area of confused currents and big waves. By the time we entered the fjord up to Fuglefjord we were doing 10.5 knots over the ground but the sea soon calmed to flat. The cloud was down and it was raining. We berthed alongside an ancient wooden pontoon with ugly bits of rust steel threatening the hull, but with some careful fendering it was soon snug. Yesterday we met Flynn’s friends Janus and Anita who were extremely hospitable, inviting us all for a meal of locally caught cod – and chips –before Janus and his friend Steingrim took us for a wonderful tour of the islands by car including a fascinating visit to the fishing net construction plant where they both worked. Dramatic scenery and a spectacular sunset just before midnight rounded off the day nicely. The only cautionary note in retrospect for future travellers is that in order to fully appreciate the unique flavour of dried whale meal and blubber – it’s best not to try it directly after eating carrot cake. Today we reluctantly leave the Faroe islands for Seydisfjiordur in Iceland.
