Pau Amma

Pau Amma is having a short stint on dry land. Part of the deal that the original Pau Amma did was to be able to live on land and in the sea. We have a Walter and Marcus in the yard with us. Walter has lived aboard for 17 years and being Swiss has had to travel the world as he has no coast of his own. Marcus is a charming Belgian / Greek - he and his girlfriend are travelling in a lovely 28 foot steel long keel Laurent Giles sloop. I have always met lovely people in boatyards.

I have a modest program of work for the week ahead. Ownership of Pau Amma is all consuming - physically, mentally and financially. Which reminds me to update you on a boat name I saw last week "SPENT" - nice. "INSHALA" is also in the Marina. Morocco is only 200 miles away and the influence is felt culturally and in some of the buildings here.

Back to the work... Our bow thruster has been trying to escape - seems that the hull plate wasn't fitted correctly and has started to wobble loose - this then can make it jam on deployment. Sanding and painting the hull in a few places where we ran out of time in Lisbon, time pressure is a false economy with boats. Repairs to Gelcoat where the anchor swings in - must get one of those clever bow fender things. Another opportunity to grease seacocks. I have heard another story of a Yacht sinking due to a faulty seacock. On a semi serious note - it seems that regulation of the boat building standards has actually reduced the quality of commonly used components. The EC directive on pleasure draft states that the valves only have to last 5 years. Maybe insurers should have more input and represent their paying customers better by lobbying the industry? Oh no - silly me, then premiums would go down and not up...

ARC atmosphere is building nicely, we are planning to leave Lanzarote and head to Gran Canaria on Monday next week. There have been incredible atlantic storms north of us and the swell here is significant enough.

It is 20 days to the start of our crossing. Our provisional estimated length of passage is 20 days. Getting close now.

Too much typing for 1 day - BYE!
