Day 13: Arrived! Now anchored safely in Horta, Faial. A
busy trans-Atlantic crossroads for sailing yachts from numerous countries
around the world - the marina is currently full and there are lots of other
boats at anchor in the harbour. We arrived just a few hours before two
catamarans that left Bermuda at the same time as us - Gemeaux (lovely couple we
met in the Bahamas winter before last) and Zorba (couple with
four young kids and a dog!) we have been communicating by email/
VHF on a fairly regularly during the crossing, particularly about
weather and tropical storm Alix. It will be nice to finally meet up with them
ashore for a beer or two. Who said two hulls were faster than one? Lots to
sort out as usual on the boat before we can go ashore... but not sure yet
if the dogs can join us or if they'll have to wait until Terceira! All in all it
was a very good ocean crossing and almost exactly the time as our trip the other
way - both almost exactly 13 days. We can't quite believe how
fast we sailed given that it wasn't a trade wind sleigh ride - we were on a beam
reach (90 degrees to the wind) - the fasted angle to sail - almost all the way,
which not the norm for an eastwards Atlantic crossing. Now hoping for similar
fair winds to get us Ireland in a month or
two........
