We left BB at 1200 local on Wednesday 15 August
(2200UT, 2300BST) having waited 24hrs for wind - there is nothing worse than
sitting in an empty ocean with the boat rolling about, the boom banging and
loose things crashing about inside so it's something to avoid if
possible.
The wait was worthwhile. We are now at sea, heading
slightly north of west (280T) with the wind just aft of the beam (the best point
of sailing) in lovely sunshine and doing 7-8kts. It's actually cool for the
first time in month, and the forecast is great.
We are heading for the island state of Niue about
1000nm away to the west, which will take us the best part of seven days. We
don't even leave French waters for another two to three days, and we've some low
islands to avoid on the way so a harp lookout is necessary. The charts around
here are often more than a hundred years old and some haven't been resurveyed
since Cook passed by; as a result the islands charted locations are often a few
miles out from their true GPS position.
