Rounded Cape Wessel at 8.30 this morning and
anchored at Double Island Bay. It was a great relief to be in flat water after a
very bumpy 48 hours. The relatively shallow waters of the Gulf and 20 to 30kt
winds produced a short and very confused sea.
The landscape here is much like I remember
from Rottnest Island....low lying with wide white sandy beaches and
interesting limestone rocky headlands. Soon after getting the anchor down in
this remote setting a fast outboard powered runabout appeared. Two
very polite and friendly customs officers took all our details, gave us weather
forecasts and crocodile warnings and flashed off to the next bay where
there were a couple of yachts at anchor.
