Distance sailed 62 miles
Up at 05.00 for the passage down the Papapsco River up Chesapeake Bay and
through the 12 mile long Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, which has no locks,
to the Delaware River and into a berth in Delaware City. Shelduck had to
enter at high tide as there is only 3 feet at the entrance at low water.
Arrived at 15.30 at an average speed of 6.2 knots. The current and wind
changed with us at every corner we turned. Very like the 1984 Round Ireland
Race. The Dockmaster gave a very good briefing to all heading down the
Delaware River to Cape May. With the wind forecast to go Southerly on Monday
I decided to take the South West breeze in the morning.
