Day 7: Carlingford to Malahide (Dublin). The last day of sailing was another early start to depart the marina at 05:30 whilst we still had enough water to get out but not so early as we needed to hit the Lough exit at slack water.
The wind had built to 18kts onshore and we dawdled down and hoisted the main with a reef to kill time . Despite being 20mins off low tide the tide was still ebbing and kicked up a rough sea in the exit channel. I’m glad we had the reef in as the wind was stronger than forecast and the sea was quite confused. It made for a lumpy ride down the coast. We didn’t need the jib as we needed to arrive at Malahide at high tide so 6hrs later. Even though the wind was mostly on the aft quarter we heeled enough for the water pump to loose its prime. I needed some flat water to depower the main, flatten the boat and try to reprime again. Luckily there is a small island off Malahide Lambaythat provided just the ticket.
This time we had to reprime twice so my mind was going into back up marinas like Howth and Dun Laoghaire . Anyway we got the engine going and anchored up to wait for high water. The Malahide entrance is another challenge as it goes over a fairly shallow beach, breaking waves either side kicked up by the 17kts still of wind. However once inside all was calm and we moored up inside a huge marina. Job done , boat delivered to Dublin, all in one piece and all in all a lovely week on a fabulous boat. The owner arrives today with the parts for a full water pump and strainer switchover.
