Osprey arrived at the Falmouth, Antigua fairway buoy at 0900 hours on the 29th November, exactly 6 days to the hour after departing St George in Bermuda. It was an extremely fast passage to the extent that the other three boats that left Bermuda at the same time are about a day and a half behind us. We all learned a lot about trimming the sails on Osprey so that we had minimum heel and maximum speed. We now know that with main, staysail and 135% Yankee cut Genoa Osprey will sit at 9+ knots in 15 to 20 knots of wind and that being a heavy boat she maintains this almost regardless of the sea state. On a close reach she will move at better than ten knots but that speed and angle do produce continuous complaints from the cook. The passage took exactly 6 days and we covered a total distance of 1184 miles to make good a rhunmb line distance of 940 miles. If we had not had much reduced winds on the final day we would have done a lot better but we nevertheless made good a speed of 8.22 knots over our track to give an average speed for the rhumb line passage of 6.53 knots. Since the refit in Portland Osprey has now covered 2449 miles. Naturally we celebrated last night and when John returned from visiting friends he found the Osprey full of partying guests from adjoining boats. There are a few sore heads around this morning Friday 30th November and we are now trying to gather the enthusiam for a big clean up to get the salt off the boat!!!
