Just a quick update and some pics of Gib.
We have been here about a week getting as usual numerous jobs done before
we leave the Med and in a place where English is understood! Having said that
they are not so conscientious when it comes to working, there always seem to be
a lot of people around and not a lot getting done. The marina staff are the most
slack, we were due some post which we knew had arrived but they couldnt be
bothered to sort it and in the end they gave Rob their PO Box key to collect all
the marina post in the hope he would find it, so much for security...fortunately
we eventually managed to track down the parcels...
On Sunday, Chris and I decided time for a bit of exercise, so donning our
walking boots we walked the southern flank of the rock to europa point
lighthouse. It took 1.15 mins and really all very English, bar the view of
Africa and Spain. Being Sunday there were numerous dads minding their children
and the cafe was heaving with a birthday tea all set out... so much for a cuppa.
The naval part is still used and we saw the old Victorian drydocks still being
used. It seems most people come to Gib for duty free shopping and drink is very
cheap with the obvious consequences. apart from that the marina area has all
been redeveloped and like Ocean Village has numerous cafes and bars so the
atmosphere is good.
Probably the most entertaining, is the airport runway which is so close, we
have seen various military aircraft – a heavy Hercules today and a chopper
practicing coming to land as well as Monarch,Easy jet and BA and the odd lear
type jet. A jeep clears the runway, a bird scarer goes off, the road is closed
and a plane comes in. Glad i don’t have to wait in the queue that builds
up.
The weather is not looking so good for tomorrow – might even be rain again
and poor vis so it looks like we might be here a bit longer.
