When we arrived here in Barbados we really, really only wanted one thing
for Christmas and yesterday after patiently waiting since 20th December
our wish came true and our new mast arrived here in Shallow Draught. It
had arrived in Barbados early last Friday morning and to celebrate we
popped open a bottle of bubbly. We knew it would take a few days to clear
customs and go the short (we can see the port from here and knew it was at
the most 400yds away) distance to where we are tied up. Tuesday we were
told probably tomorrow and so after a restless night of excitement we were
up early Wednesday (yesterday) morning in anticipation. As ever with these
things a watched pot never boils so we tried valiantly to keep ourselves
occupied with jobs around the boat. Lunchtime approached and we were
getting twitchy and then the phone call came through to say that the truck
had the mast and the customs guard on board and was on its way. 10 minutes
later the truck (well it had to get out of the port after customs – only
200 yards away) appeared round the corner and we could see our packages.
Once everything was signed for and unloaded then began the fun of
unpacking and getting sight of our long awaited present. It looks
terrific and so new and shiny and very, very strong. As we unpacked the
attendant boxes it felt like the dream trip to the chandlers as all the
new goodies were revealed. New clutches, winches, sheets and other gear a
lovely sight to behold. Now starts the job of assembling it all together
hoping that we don’t have any bits left over........
More in due course
